Fibrous Papule of the Nose at a Glance
What is a fibrous papule? A benign, firm, skin-coloured or pink bump, usually 1–5 mm, most often seen on the nose.
What are the symptoms? Typically asymptomatic; does not itch or hurt. May slowly enlarge and be mistaken for acne, mole, or skin cancer.
Who gets it? Most common in young to middle-aged adults. Both men and women can be affected.
Why is it important to diagnose? Although harmless, it can mimic basal cell carcinoma. Proper diagnosis avoids anxiety and inappropriate treatments.
How is it treated? No treatment is needed unless for cosmetic reasons or diagnostic clarity. Options include shave excision, curettage, or laser removal.
When should I see a doctor? If a bump on the nose changes in size, colour, bleeds, or resembles skin cancer.
Complications? None medically; possible cosmetic concern. Removal carries minor risks of scarring or pigmentation change.

What is a fibrous papule?

A fibrous papule is a benign growth arising from fibrous and vascular tissue within the skin. It appears as a smooth, dome-shaped papule, often flesh-coloured, pink, or slightly red, typically located on the nose.

Causes and development

The exact cause is unknown, but fibrous papules are thought to represent a type of angiofibroma. They are not related to infection or trauma and do not spread to other people.

Symptoms and appearance

Most fibrous papules are small (1–5 mm), firm, and asymptomatic. They may remain stable for years or very slowly increase in size. Patients often mistake them for persistent spots or worry about skin cancer.

Diagnosis and tests

Diagnosis is usually clinical, made by a dermatologist during skin examination. Dermoscopy may aid in distinguishing from basal cell carcinoma. In uncertain cases, a biopsy may be performed.

Treatment and management

Because fibrous papules are harmless, treatment is optional. When removal is desired for cosmetic reasons or to confirm diagnosis, minor procedures such as shave excision, electrosurgery, or laser therapy are effective. Healing is usually quick with minimal scarring.
