Introduction

Rosacea isn’t just “redness.” It can sting or burn, flare after wine or heat, show broken capillaries, and sometimes create persistent bumps or changes in the nose (rhinophyma). Because triggers vary, we pair medical treatment with practical lifestyle strategies and a gentle, protective skincare routine. Your plan will target the exact subtype(s) you have — flushing/erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous (including rhinophyma), and ocular rosacea.

Ready to calm redness and regain control with a plan that fits your life?

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of facial skin with enhanced vascular reactivity. Typical features include flushing, persistent redness, sensitivity/stinging, papules/pustules, visible thread veins (telangiectasia), and — in some — thickening of the nose skin (rhinophyma). Ocular rosacea can present with dry, gritty eyes and lid margin inflammation. It is not contagious.

Triggers may include heat, spicy foods, alcohol, hot drinks, sun exposure, wind, harsh skincare, and emotional stress. Treating rosacea blends inflammation control, vascular management, trigger navigation and barrier care.

Diagnosis & Assessment at Skinhorizon
  • Subtype mapping: flushing/erythema, papulopustular, telangiectatic, phymatous (rhinophyma), ocular.
  • Trigger profile: heat, alcohol, hot drinks, exercise, skincare actives, wind/cold, stress.
  • Skin sensitivity & barrier: stinging/burning; product tolerance; previous reactions.
  • Ocular screening: dryness, grittiness, red eyelids; onward referral if severe.
  • Exclusions/mimics: acne, seborrhoeic dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, photodamage.

Personalised Treatment Options We Offer

Topical Treatment

We choose gentle, effective topicals based on your subtype(s). Options can reduce inflammation, shrink visible vessels temporarily, and soothe stinging while protecting your barrier. Your written plan explains where to apply, frequency, and when to pause during flares.

Oral Antibiotics (short, targeted courses)

For inflammatory papules/pustules or ocular involvement, short courses of oral antibiotics with anti-inflammatory action can help. We combine them with appropriate skincare and topicals, and review regularly to keep courses brief.

Low-Dose Isotretinoin

In selected adults with resistant papulopustular rosacea, low-dose isotretinoin may reduce inflammation and oiliness. We counsel on benefits, monitoring and pregnancy prevention requirements, and adjust supportive skincare to prevent dryness.

LED Light Therapy

Medical-grade LED can calm redness and support skin recovery with excellent tolerability and no downtime. We often combine LED with topical programs to settle flares faster. Learn more about our LED Phototherapy.

Microneedling (for scarring/texture after control)

Once inflammatory lesions are controlled, microneedling can help with residual acne-type scarring or texture change. We avoid microneedling during active rosacea flares and on very reactive skin. See Microneedling.

Laser for Thread Veins (Telangiectasia)

Targeted vascular lasers or light devices coagulate visible facial vessels to reduce redness and improve clarity. We map vessels, plan session spacing, and combine with gentle skincare and sun protection for best results. (Internal link when live: Laser for Thread Veins)

CO₂ Laser for Rhinophyma

For phymatous rosacea with nose thickening, CO₂ laser reshapes excess tissue and refines contour. This is a precise procedure performed in a medical setting with tailored aftercare. We provide realistic timelines, downtime guidance and follow-up plans.

Skincare Products (supportive care)

We curate fragrance-aware, barrier-supportive options that calm stinging, reduce redness look, and protect from UV. Expect simple routines with a gentle cleanse, light hydration and a high-protection SPF suitable for sensitive skin. We’ll personalise selections from the clinic range during your consultation.

  3. In-Clinic Options: LED, thread vein laser, and — when indicated — CO₂ laser for rhinophyma.

Special Situations We Consider
  • Ocular rosacea: lid hygiene guidance, lubricants; onward referral if severe.
  • Highly sensitive/reactive skin: minimalist routines; avoid common irritants and hot water.
  • Skin of colour: tailored laser parameters and PIH-aware aftercare; camouflage tips if desired.
  • Rhinophyma: staged CO₂ planning, realistic downtime expectations.
  • Comorbidities & medicines: we review interactions and safety before starting systemic options.
Triggers, Skincare & Daily Habits

Common culprits: heat, spicy foods, alcohol, hot drinks, sun/wind exposure, vigorous scrubs, fragranced products. Practical swaps: lukewarm water, gentle cleansing, microfibre cloth (no rubbing), breathable fabrics in hot weather, shade-seeking, and SPF every day. Keep a short trigger diary to spot your personal patterns.

Daily Skin Routine (Rosacea-Friendly)

Aim for calm, consistent care: gentle cleanse → soothe/hydrate → protect. Patch-test new products for 24 hours; stop anything that stings or burns.

Morning (AM)

  • Cleanse (very gentle): CB Baby Cleansing Bar • CB Calendula Cleansing Bar
  • Soothe & hydrate: DP Exo-Skin Moisturiser 30 ml (thin layer)
  • Protect (daily): JD Crème Solaire Ma Peau Sensible SPF 50+ or CF SPF Clear (choose preferred finish)

Evening (PM)

  • Cleanse: CB Baby or CB Calendula (lukewarm water; no scrubbing)
  • Replenish: DP Exo-Skin Moisturiser 30 ml
  • Optional calming mask (1–2×/week): JD Masque aux Cranberries (avoid if stings) or DP Hyla Active 3D Sculptured Mask

On Flare Days

  • Skip strong actives and scrubs; keep water lukewarm.
  • Use DP Exo-Skin more often for comfort; let skin air-dry briefly before applying.
  • Shade-seek; reapply SPF if outdoors. Consider a light mineral tint if you prefer coverage.
If using low-dose isotretinoin: avoid waxing and strong acids/retinoids; moisturise lips often; SPF daily.
Safety & Potential Risks

We choose the least-burdensome effective plan. Antibiotics are short and reviewed; low-dose isotretinoin requires counselling and safeguards. LED is well-tolerated; vascular lasers/CO₂ are delivered with medical protocols and precise aftercare to minimise risk and maximise results.

Expected Outcomes

Many patients notice reduced stinging and calmer redness within weeks, fewer inflammatory bumps over 4–8 weeks, and clearer complexion with vascular treatments. With consistent routine and trigger navigation, control is sustained and flares are shorter and milder.

Patient Experience

“The redness and burning settled, and the thread vein laser made the biggest difference to how my skin looks in daylight.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rosacea curable?
No, but it’s very manageable. With tailored treatment, gentle skincare and trigger navigation, most people achieve long-term control and confidence.
How long until I see improvement?
Many feel calmer skin within weeks. Inflammatory bumps typically improve by 4–8 weeks; thread vein laser results show over a series of sessions.
Will lasers make my rosacea worse?
Not when correctly selected and delivered. Vascular lasers target visible vessels; we use conservative parameters and medical aftercare to minimise downtime and sensitivity.
Can I have microneedling with active rosacea?
We wait until inflammation is controlled. Then we can address texture or scarring carefully and gradually.
Which sunscreen should I use?
High-protection SPF for sensitive skin. We often recommend JD Crème Solaire Ma Peau Sensible SPF 50+ or CF SPF Clear; reapply if outdoors.
